dental-appt-thailand

Popular Thai dental treatments – costs and time-frames – the treatment duration is for the dental work and does not include travel days.

Fillings | 1-2 days

Fillings start at around 600 Thai Baht (approx. $20 at today’s currency exchange) and up. The price depends on the size of the filling/location of the tooth. Most fillings can be completed in a day, several fillings may need additional visits over a few days.

Laser Whitening | 1 visit

Laser teeth whitening can be completed in one visit. The laser whitening cost is around 10,000 Thai Baht (approx. $335 at today’s currency exchange).

Full Denture | 7-10 days, allowing up to 10 days is best.

Upper and Lower Full Denture (regular, not implant supported) 29,000 to 40,000 Thai Baht (approx. $971 to $1,339 at today’s currency exchange)

Veneers, Crowns, Bridges  | 7-10 days, allowing up to 10 days is best.

IPS Empress Brand Veneers cost 12,000 to 14,000 Thai Baht (approx. $400 to $470 at today’s currency exchange)

Crowns cost 14,000 to 17,000 Thai Baht (approx. $470 to $570 at today’s currency exchange) – the price depends on the quality of porcelain (ceramic), metals used. This price is for higher quality all porcelain or porcelain fused to semi-precious metals.

Bridge (regular bridge, not-implant supported) cost 14,000 to 17,000 Thai Baht (approx. $470 to $570 at today’s currency exchange)

Root Canal | up to 14 days

Root canals start at 4,000 Thai Baht (approx. $133 at today’s currency exchange) and up. Up to 14 days is needed making root canals one of the longer dental treatments.

Single Dental Implants, Smaller Implant Supported Bridges, Full Arch Restorations with 6 implants and Ceramic Teeth | 2 Trips over at 4 to 6 months (in most cases).

The 4-6 months is needed for implant healing time (osseointegration). The implant surgery is on the first trip and the crowns and/or bridgework on the implant(s) is completed on the second trip after the implant has healed to the jaw bone. Placing a permanent crown or bridge on a newly placed implant(s) can lead to higher rates of implant failure therefore the healing time to make sure the implant is firmly in the jaw bone before the restoration is loaded (attached) to the implants.

Dental Implant costs 50,000 Thai Baht (approx. $1,675 at today’s currency exchange). The abutment and implant-crown costs 25,000 Thai Baht (approx. $839 at today’s currency exchange).

Implant Supported Bridges are quoted per case.

Most dental implant surgeries can be completed in 7 to 10 days for the first trip including bone grafting when needed. Sinus Lift surgery can take up to 21 days to complete. Bone Grafting and Sinus Lift costs determined from the OPG dental x-ray.

Immediate Loading Dental Implants (All-on-4, All-on-5, All-on-6 Systems) | 10 days.

Immediate Loading Implants are popular because a 10-12 unit prosthesis (teeth) can be loaded (attached) to 4, 5 or 6 implants within 10 days. Immediate loading systems are indicated for full denture wearers looking to upgrade to implants or people who have been told that they need a full denture by their dentist due to severely compromised teeth. Not everyone is a candidate for Immediate Loading Systems and every treatment must be evaluated by an OPG x-ray on a case by case basis since cases can vary. In most cases bone grafting is not needed with Immediate Loading Systems, but in some All-on-4, All-on-5, All-on-6 cases bone grafting may be needed.

All-on-4 costs 350,000 Thai Baht (approx. $11,720 at today’s currency exchange)

All-on-5 costs 400,000 Thai Baht (approx. $13,395 at today’s currency exchange)

All-on-6 costs 450,000 Thai Bath (approx. $15,069 at today’s currency exchange)

The treatment durations listed above are guidelines and apply to non-complicated cases.  An important tool in planning the dental work in Thailand is the OPG dental x-ray. OPG dental x-rays make quoting root canals, crowns, bridges, veneers and implants possible. OPG x-rays also help dentists determine if a person is a candidate for a treatment (Immediate Loading Implants is one example, veneers is another where someone may not be a candidate for treatment). OPGs also help rule out any complications that could delay or extend the treatment time. Usually, dental travelers to Thailand have already seen a local dentist for an opinion and received an OPG dental x-ray from their local dentist that they have forwarded to Thailand for evaluation before the trip.

All-on-4 Dental Implants Thailand Review with Chris P. – Smile Planners Interview

Smile Planners sat down with Chris P. to talk about his experience having the All-on-4 Implant Technique in Thailand, here’s what he had to say about the clinic, the dental team and how surprised he was at how little discomfort he felt during and after the dental implants treatment.

Video Transcription

Top notch top notch everything, I mean from the welcome to all the support staff to the procedure, it’s all top notch.

Went perfectly, that’s what I would like to say, everything went perfectly. I was sure that there would be hitches here or there but really as far as the work was concerned it went really well.

No pain, so, I think that’s…I’ve always been skittish when it comes to dental work but this in terms of pain was a real pleasant surprise.

I was given everything I needed really, with the choice of…I mean the pain was not really great afterwards, so you don’t need anything stronger than tylenol or ibuprofen, both of which I was given.

One of the really important things about the procedure here was the amount of time that it takes, it was ten days, so I could plan on it. Other dental implant solutions in the States, they take more time, dentists want you back there multiple visits.

I would say go for it, if you got the money go for it. I mean yeah. And if you got half the money you need in the States definitely go for it and add an adventure to it and come see a beautiful country.

All-on-4 Dental Implants Technique in Thailand Review with John L. – Smile Planners Video Interview

A few weeks ago, we sat down with John L. from Australia to talk about his first hand experience having the All-on-4 Technique in Thailand. Here’s what he had to say about the clinic, the dental team, the staff and the treatment itself.

Video Transcription

I had to have all my teeth removed and I had false teeth made, but I found that I couldn’t wear them. They made me gag and want to spew-up when i had them in and so I looked at what alternatives there was, anything better than false teeth. And I come across All-on-4. So I’ve done a little bit of research in Australia but it was way out of my price range. Then I started to look on the internet at all different countries to see what prices I could find. And then I come across Smile Planners and rang them up and asked them a few questions and decided to go ahead in Thailand to have them done.

This is my second time back, I had the top done six months ago and come back now to have the bottom done. I think he’s done the best job ever because I have not had one issue with them whatsoever and they feel exactly as if they were my real teeth. I was expecting that I might have a bit of rubbing on the gums or something like that. Or have a sore turn up or an ulcer or something – I’ve had none whatsoever . Everything’s been 100% perfect. I can eat meat and steaks and things like that where I couldn’t before.

That first day I was in a little bit of pain, not overwhelming pain, they gave me five of six tablets to take back with me to the hotel and I think I only had two of them that whole time. The first day I had the pain, but by the second day I had no pain whatsoever. Didn’t feel any pain, even now every other procedure they’ve done since then I’ve had no pain whatsoever. The only bit of pain was when they put the pins [dental implants] in and that only lasted that one day. By the next morning I was as good as gold. And I could still eat and everything.

When you come here its all state of the art, spotlessly clean, the service of everybody is very friendly and helpful and they’ll talk to you if you got any questions about anything and you can ask and they can communicate to you in English which was a big help.

You get to the airport and you know exactly where you are going. There is someone there to pick you up so you’re not turning up and being overwhelmed  because you don’t know where to go or what to do. Everything is explained to you. Even when you leave they take you back to the airport. All your appointments they come pick you up so you don’t have to worry about trying to get taxis, trying to get there and being late.

It changed my life in a big way. I had no self confidence back with no teeth because  everyone looks at you and because I am so young and they look at you and think ‘why has he lost all his teeth.’ So I was very ashamed. I wouldn’t smile. I had to learn how to smile again because I had no teeth I was used to not smiling and trying to hid it all the time. Now I feel so confident that back in Australia I go out and people they can’t believe the difference in me and how much my face has lifted up, everything. When we go back to Australia now with all my family I can go to Christmas day and feel comfortable about myself and not having to try to hide from all the family photos, now I can be in them.

I’d like to thank the doctor who done my teeth. And I complimented him before he left. I can’t understand how good of a job he done. I’d like to thank all the staff here, I’d like to thank all them for being so helpful and looking after you so well. I’d just like to say thank you to everyone.

All-on-4 Plus Dental Implants in Thailand

Here is an excellent picture of a All-on-4 Plus Dental Implants and Fixed Teeth in Thailand. All-on-4 Plus in implant dentistry refers to the All-on-4(tm) protocol plus an additional 1 or sometimes 2 implants for extra support for the implant supported fixed teeth when needed. In the OPG x-ray are two angled implants at the back, angled implants are key to immediate loading of the fixed teeth. In addition to the 2 angled implants in the upper jaw are 3 in between, this type of implant and fixed teeth is referred to as All-on-4 Plus, or sometimes simply All-on-5 (all teeth on 5 dental implants).

OPG X-rays for All-on-Four and Other Dental Treatments

OPG Dental X-ray

Most people have had a an intraoral dental x-ray at one time or another. Intraoral x-rays are the ones in which the x-ray film is placed inside the mouth – the ones you bite down on , they are sometimes not the most comfortable dental x-rays. Advances in dental imaging technology have brought Orthopantomogram (OPG) dental x-ray machines into many dental offices.

Unlike intraoral x-rays the OPG x-ray machine takes a scan of the entire upper and lower jaw at the same time scanning the teeth and jaw bone from ear to ear. It takes about a minute and there is no x-ray film holders to bite down on. An OPG x-ray can show facial bones, teeth and sinuses all in one image 2D image.

For evaluating All-on-Four and other dental implant treatments, implant dentists rely on either OPG x-rays or 3D CT Scans to get a good look at the underlying bone where the implants will be placed. Implant dentists use OPG or 3D CT Scan to see if a patient is a candidate for dental implants, create treatment plans, cost estimates and quotes. From the images, the implant dentist can also see if bone or sinus grafting is needed as part of the dental implant treatment.

There are Film OPGs and Digital OPGs. Film OPGs provide one original. Digital OPGs can be copied and emailed, digital OPGs are simply uploaded to computer or emailed like a regular picture.

While scanning Film OPG x-rays onto a computer does work, the scanned Film OPG often turns out too dark to be evaluated. Special x-ray scanning machines are needed to properly digitize Film OPGs – home of office scanners will not work. For this reason, film OPG x-rays will probably be phased out over the next decade as more dentists increasingly use the more convenient, digital OPG format.

For more on OPGs, please see the OPG X-ray Reference Page on Wikipedia

Dental Holiday Excursions in Thailand by Air and Rail

The Hua Hin Rail Station at Night
The Hua Hin Rail Station at Night

Before or after your dental holiday, you may want to take an excursion from Bangkok and explore the North or South of  Thailand.

By Air

Some of the most popular airlinks in Thailand are Bangkok to Chiang Mai and Chaing Rai in the North and Bangkok to Phuket in the South, flights in either direction take about an hour

Last minute flights within Thailand are fairly easy to arrange and can be made online within a matter of minutes. The main last minute carriers in Thailand are Air Asia and Nok Air. Nok Air has a quick and easy online reservation system and covers the major and many regional airports in Thailand. And Air Asia has more destinations throughout Asia and beyond.

When booking online, with Air Asia you will need a credit card. Nok Air gives you the option to book online and pay for the ticket at any 7-11 in Thailand – if you do not have a credit card handy – they will send the booking number in a SMS to your mobile and just use that number to pay for the ticket at the 7-11 counter, now that’s convenient.

The discount carriers also have kiosks at the airports where you can buy tickets for future or same day flights. Thailand’s national airline, Thai Airways, also flies the most popular domestic routes and internationally.

A quick search today showed same day tickets from Bangkok to Phuket for around $99 one-way on Nok Air for example – they are less expensive when purchased in advance.

By Train

For the more adventurous there is the train. There are overnight sleeper trains heading north and south daily. The Bangkok – Chiang Mai Train takes about 11 hours to make the journey – the overnight journey costs around $25 – $45. The more modern trains have electric outlets in the compartment so you can charge your mobile or watch a movie on computer, but only some trains. So make sure to charge electronics before the trip. The train staff are quite friendly and make their way up and down the train regularly in case you need any food or refreshments.

You can buy dinner on the train, the food is a mostly Thai fare with non-spicy and spicier entrees – there are also vegetarian dishes – dinner costs around $5. Breakfast is served as well, Thai breakfast (soup) and American style breakfast.

Train tickets are available at the main train station in Bangkok. Your hotel’s travel desk can usually also arrange tickets.

Bangkok Dental Veneers Review: 'Perfection really, superior to previous dental visit in both US and Hong Kong.'
Smile Planners Porcelain Veneers Testimonial

What are dental veneers

A dental veneer is a thin shell that can change the shape of a tooth. With dental veneers cosmetic dentists can create a new, perfectly-shaped smile in days. A dental veneer can be made from composite or ceramic (porcelain). Composite veneers are less expensive then porcelain, with porcelain the higher end material and higher price tag. Dental veneers are metal-free.

Dental veneers are used on:

  • crooked
  • chipped
  • cracked
  • worn teeth

They are also used to treat severely stained teeth, in particular tetracycline stained teeth. Dental veneers can also be used to close the gaps between teeth.

Treatment time for porcelain veneers in Thailand

The treatment time varies between 7 to 10 days.

Smile Planners works with Thai cosmetic dentists who studied cosmetic dentistry at Thailand’s top dental universities and internationally – in particular in the USA, UK and Australia. The senior specialist price is 9,000 Thai Baht per porcelain veneer in Bangkok. Porcelain veneers are completed in 7-10 days from the first appointment, 7-10 days is more time than other clinics may recommed other clinics may rush treatments, however our dentists do not rush veneers treatment believing that rushing does not allow enough time for tooth preparation, veneers creation in the dedicated lab, fittings and followup before the flight home. For more information see Smile Planners Dental Veneers Thailand Promotion.

Getting a Quote

From our experience working with cosmetic dentists in Thailand, we know that the dentists will need to see teeth pictures in order to create a recommendation and quote for dental veneers, it is important that the dental team see teeth photos to make sure that the teeth are suitable for veneers, since not every case is a candidate for veneers and it is better to establish this before the flight. The pictures need to be clear, close up and show as much teeth and gum as possible. There should be pictures taken from the front and right and left sides with teeth together and teeth pictures showing the upper and lower jaws’ teeth from the inside of the mouth.  The pictures can be taken with a regular digital camera, or mobile phone camera – the main thing is that the pictures are clear and close up. There is no wait list for veneers treatment.

This post is for editorial purposes and is not intended as an endorsement of the clinics in this price comparison. The prices are based on published dental veneers prices on the websites of the clinics mentioned.

Full smile reconstruction with dental implants and new teeth is as for people who are unhappy wearing dentures or people who are faced with the prospect of having to wear a denture. With dental implants and new teeth the implant dentist places dental implants in the jaw, a full set of new teeth is then permanently attached to the dental implants. Once in place the implant supported teeth will not slip, drop or move. The new teeth will look and function like a full set of permanent teeth. There is never a need for denture creams with implant supported teeth since they are permanently attached to the dental implants.

The new teeth are attached to the dental implants with special tools and techniques by the implant dentist. Once in place, only a trained implant dentist can remove the teeth.

Dental Implants and new teeth in Thailand cost up to 50 to 60 percent less than in the USA or Australia. According to published prices All on 4™ Implants can cost up to $25,000 per arch in the USA and Australia.

All on 4™ Implants technique uses 4 dental implants to support the new teeth. In some cases the implant dentist may recommend additional implants for maximum stability of the new teeth.

About the treatment

Implantologist in Thailand

For decades, dentures were the only option for people missing all their teeth. But over the years more and more implant dentists have been placing dental implants in the jaw and then attaching fixed teeth to the implants with special dental implant tools. The dental implant is made of titanium and works a lot like a person’s natural tooth root. Like a natural tooth root keeps a natural tooth firmly in place, the titanium dental implants keep the fixed teeth firmly in place. Titanium also has a special quality that makes it a great material for dental implants. Titanium attaches directly to the jaw bone in a process called Osseointegration, meaning the titanium implant sticks to the bone almost like being cemented to the jawbone, but through the Osseointegration process.

The Osseointegration of the dental implant to the jawbone makes the dental implant incredibly stable. Once the dental implants are in place, the implant dentist then attaches the fixed teeth (set of new teeth) to the 4 dental implants with specially designed dental implant tools and screws. Once the dental implant specialist bolts the new teeth into place only a dental implant specialist with special tools can remove it. Now firmly in place you can live a more active lifestyle, eat many of the foods you’ve been missing, and smile with confidence. You take care of your new implant teeth like you would your own natural teeth too with brushing.
